If you're designing a kitchen, wardrobe or custom built-in furniture, chances are you've encountered the question, „What kind of front do you want?” Often the focus is on colour, but that's not where the real differences start. A EGGER decorative collection 26+ I want to show you what really happens behind the surface and what it means to you to have a laminate, decor, texture or synchronous pore design.

Last week I was in Austria for a demonstration of EGGER at the invitation of JAF Holz, and the factory visit confirmed that material choice is not just an aesthetic issue. Your furniture will be used daily, touched, cleaned and lived with - so it's important to understand what you are choosing.
WHAT IS A LAMINATE SURFACE AND WHY IS IT NOT A COMPROMISE?
Laminate furniture board is made from a wood-based substrate, on which a printed decor is applied under high pressure and temperature, and then sealed with a wear-resistant protective layer. Put simply, the look is created by a precisely printed pattern and the durability is ensured by the technology.

Many people still classify laminate surfaces as „cheap imitations”, even though today's production technology is on a completely different level. It's stable, less warped than solid wood, easy to clean, and comes in a very wide range of decors. If you don't want to stick with real veneers or classic etched patterns, it's one of the best value for money options.

EGGER DECORATIVE COLLECTION 26+: WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT?
From EGGER an Austrian family business founded in 1961, has grown to become one of Europe's largest manufacturers of wood-based panels. What I find particularly appealing is that the family approach has been retained: they plan for the long term and place a strong emphasis on sustainability.

Decorative Collection 26+ is not just an updated catalogue. It's a complete system that coordinates decors, textures, countertops and edgings. This means that when you choose a surface, there's a good chance you'll find matching accessories.
Details of the collection can also be found in a technical summary on the JAF Holz website:

DECOR AND STRUCTURE - THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SIGHT AND TOUCH
When choosing a material, there are two concepts to distinguish: decor and texture.
A decor is what you see. This is the printed pattern: it can be light oak, dark walnut, concrete effect or marble. A structure is what you feel. Smooth, rough, lightly grooved or completely matt.

The two do not always coincide. The pattern may be wood grain, but the surface may be completely smooth. In this case, the eye and the touch do not meet and this can be subconsciously confusing.
With synchronous porous surfaces, known at EGGER as Feelwood, the texture follows the pattern of the decor exactly. If there is a vein running through the pattern, you will feel it with your finger. This gives a lifelike effect that is very close to the look of veneered fronts.
WHAT DID I SEE ON THE FACTORY VISIT?
In the manufacturing process, the decor is applied after the substrate is prepared and the structure is then pressed on under high pressure. The process is precisely controlled and each sheet is quality controlled. There was no „mass production feel”, but a conscious, engineering design.

What was particularly interesting for me was that the development of the decor and the structure are not done separately. The designers think about the feel of the pattern from the moment it is created. This is the detail that we can only sense in the showroom, but not see the work behind it.
PERFECT SENSE - WHEN THE SURFACE HAS A PREMIUM EFFECT
One of the most exciting parts of the Decorative Collection 26+ is the Perfect Sense range of surfaces. These are lacquered finishes that have a silky feel, a deep matt effect and, most importantly for everyday use, are fingerprint resistant.

For a kitchen, this is a big advantage. You don't have to constantly wipe the fronts, yet the overall look remains elegant and clean. Some synchronous porcelain finishes in lacquered finishes create an even more natural effect.
The Perfect Sense Ambiance version features a combination of matt and glossy surfaces within a single sheet. For stone patterns, this is particularly impressive because it adds depth and play of light to the surface.
WHEN TO CHOOSE THE LAMINATE SOLUTION?
A laminate front is a good choice if you want a modern, clean look, are cost-conscious and if easy maintenance is important to you. Today's decorative finishes are no longer a necessity, but a conscious alternative.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE CHOOSING?
Furniture is not just a showpiece. It is an object of use that you touch several times a day. The gloss, the touch, the texture all influence the experience. A well-chosen décor-structure combination can provide years of pleasure, while an overdone choice can quickly become a distraction.
